About the Tour

Who

The tour is available on a first come, first served basis to Rotary international exchange students being hosted in District 7810/20.  In the recent past, exchange students in other areas have been invited to participate on a “space available” basis.  Ultimate participation is subject to the student’s behaviour track record within their host families and communities.  The YEP District Chairs, the Club Presidents and the tour co-coordinators and chaperones hold the decision authority with respect to a student’s participation.

What

Train GroupThe Rotary Canada Rail Tour (cross Canada tour or CCT) is a 4 week rail trip across Canada.

The tour typically begins the third week of June 20 and ends sometime in the third week of July 20. It varies each year we must juggle the train schedules, Canada Day and the Calgary Stampede dates. Students have a choice to return to their host community or fly directly home (if their airline ticket allows that change) on the final day of the tour.

Included in the registration fees are the following:

  • rail transportation, economy class, east to west
  • group van tours and transfers
  • ferry crossings to Vancouver Island
  • bus transportation throughout Alberta
  • taxi transfers as needed by the group
  • economy airfare from the west to the east
  • nights accommodations (when not on the train) in youth hostels, hotels or Rotary billet homes
  • baggage handling for one medium suitcase
  • meals or meal allowances are provided approximately 70% of the time. Students are responsible for some meals on the tour and must budget for that.
  • dozens of group activities, entrances, tours, attractions, special events
  • “Team uniform”

Not included in the registration fees are a variety of things, among which are:

  • laundry expenses
  • souvenirs, film, postcards, postage
  • costs associated with “extra” activities which the student may wish to enjoy i.e. Additional plays, tours, movies, recreational opportunities. A list of suggested “extras” will be provided and participation in some is on a first come, first served basis due to space limitations.
  • some meals as already noted.

The tour includes many “basic” group events, tours, attractions, outings and special meals. Typically, we have at least one “group” event each day which is included in the registration fees. These events are chosen by the tour leaders to provide access by all students to highlights of an historical/cultural/educational nature as we cross the country.
